چکیده

For many primary storage customers, storage must balance the requirements for large capacity, high performance, and low cost. A well studied technique is to place a solid state drive (SSD) cache in front of hard disk drive (HDD) storage, which can achieve much of the performance benefit of SSDs and the cost per gigabyte efficiency of HDDs. To further lower the cost of SSD caches and increase effective capacity, we propose the addition of data reduction techniques. Our cache architecture, called Nitro, has three main contributions: (1) an SSD cache design with adjustable deduplication, compression, and large replacement units, (2) an evaluation of the trade-offs between data reduction, RAM requirements, SSD writes (reduced up to 53%, which improves lifespan), and storage performance, and (3) acceleration of two prototype storage systems with an increase in IOPS (up to 120%) and reduction of read response time (up to 55%) compared to an SSD cache without Nitro. Additional benefits of Nitro include improved random read performance, faster snapshot restore, and reduced writes to SSDs.

Combo Drive: Optimizing Cost and Performance in a Heterogeneous Storage Device

We propose a new type of heterogeneous storage device called Combo Drive, which comprises of a smaller-capacity low-latency solid-state disk drive (SSD) concatenated with a larger-capacity high-throughput hard disk drive (HDD). The overall cost of a Combo Drive, similar to a Hybrid Drive, is still dominated by the more capacious HDD. With Combo Drive, the performance advantages of both the SSD ...

Design and Implementation of Cache Manager for Hybrid Storage

The technology and cost barrier of the SSD motivated many research groups and companies to merge the SSD with low cost and large capacity storage device, Hard Disk Drive (HDD). As the NAND flash memory technology is getting more advanced, price of NAND flash memory dropped dramatically. As number of bits per cell in NAND flash memory is increasing, the price of $/GByte is reduced. This trend wi...

A Cache Design of SSD-based Search Engine Architectures: An Experimental Study

Caching is an important optimization in search engine architectures. Existing caching techniques for search engine optimization are mostly biased towards the reduction of random accesses to disks, because random accesses are known to be much more expensive than sequential accesses in traditional magnetic hard disk drive (HDD). Recently, solid state drive (SSD) has emerged as a new kind of secon...

Understanding the Impact of Cache Locations on Storage Performance and Energy Consumption of Virtualization Systems

As per-server CPU cores and DRAM capacity continuously increase, application density of virtualization platforms hikes. High application density imposes tremendous pressure on storage systems. Layers of caches are deployed to improve storage performance. Owing to its manageability and transparency advantages, hypervisorside caching is widely employed. However, hypervisorside caches locate at th...

An Efficient Design and Implementation of Multi-level Cache for Database Systems

Flash-based solid state device(SSD) is making deep inroads into enterprise database applications due to its faster data access. The capacity and performance characteristics of SSD make it well-suited for use as a second-level buffer cache. In this paper, we propose a SSD-based multilevel buffer scheme, called flash-aware second-level cache(FASC), where SSD serves as an extension of the DRAM buf...
